Holford was one of the 19 RM Officers who volunteered for flying under AF.O. 1058/24. Unfortunately after gaining his wings he was involved in a serious air crash and his injuries resulted in him being forced to return to Corps Duties.

He retired on 1 March 1948 and died on 21 September 1976.
