Bertie Knowles was one of the 19 RM Officers who volunteered for the FAA under AF.O. 1058/24 and who were on overlapping courses in 1924/25. They all served in First Line squadrons in China and the Mediterranean and helped form the nucleus of the revived Fleet Air Arm under the Trenchard - Keyes agreement of 1924.

He returned to Corps Duty on 10 August 1940 and thereafter served in GD appointment including I of SA and I of G.

He retired on 14 Febuary 1950 and died on 7 February 1971.
