Having qualified as a floatplane pilot, Victor Marryat was switched to fighter training on 22 April 1940. On only the second day of the course at RNAS Eastleigh, flying a Gloster Gladiator and practising fonow the leader with an Instructor he failed to pull out of a dive and crashed straight into the ground. He was killed instantly.
It was strongly felt at the time that this accident was the result of bad instruction and bad briefing, the fighter school having only just been formed. Some of the pupils had more experience than some of the Instructors.
